Who Are the Present-Day Scots Anyway?

Scotland took its name from the Scots, a part of those mysterious nomadic tribes called Celts by the historians. The Scots, in turn, took their name from Scota -- the daughter of Pharaoh Nectonibis of Egypt's 13th Dynasty -- who married their ancestor Gathelus (Miletus) during the time of Moses. After coming into Ireland from Egypt and Spain, they later emigrated to Scotland which was then called Alban or Pictland.

The mosaic presented by the national life of the British peoples these days is one of increasing chaos. Among numerous alien forces at work creating this chaos are two which, although contradictory, are mutually destructive. These have become noticeably active in recent years.

On the one hand there are those citizens whose ambition it is to turn the United Kingdom into a multiracial society, encouraging the ceaseless influx of other races to flood the already overcrowded islands of Britain, and screaming "racist" at those who dare object. On the other hand are those who are passionately determined to fragment Britain -- demanding "national" independence for the Scots, Irish, Welsh, Cornishmen and even the English! Strange as it may seem, no one labels them "racist"!

There is no doubt that many of these people are sincere and idealistic but, unfortunately, very naive. They simply do not realize that they are being deceived by the strategies of alien minds whose purpose is the division and destruction of the British nation.

In Scotland there has arisen the Scottish Nationist Party which, in recent years, has burgeoned due to the disillusionment caused by the failure of successive Westminster governments to adequately deal with Britain's post-war crises. Considerable financial support has been coming in for this cause, enabling the participants to launch "racist" campaigns which actually accuse the English "imperialists" of draining Scotland economically dry. However, it seems that fluctuating fortunes would indicate that this flourishing of pseudo-nationalism may be an abortive one: a freak phase in a dangerously sick society. For the British peoples to allow themselves to become thus disunited at the time of the worst crisis in all their history -- when major dangers threaten them from without and within -- would be an act of national suicide.

The British Peoples Are Racially One

The assumption that the people who live in Scotland are racially different from the English, Welsh and Irish (which is the basis of Scottish nationalism) is very wrong.

Already in Scotland were the Picts, made up of two main groups composed of a related Celtic people and a Canaanite or Phoenician people. The Celtic Picts embodied others who had settled in Scotland at an earlier date, including the Iberians, the Tuatha de Danaan (tribe of Dan) and the Goths. According to the British historian Bede, the Celtic Picts had arrived in Ireland (Scotia) after journeying from Scythia in longboats, and were from there directed by the inhabitants (Scots) to Scotland (Alban). The Scots promised to aid them if they met with any opposition from the inhabitants. The Scots also provided them with wives. The famed art of the Celtic Picts -- which has endured on their stone monuments -- supports Bede's testimony that they came from Scythia, for it shows characteristics peculiar to Scythian art. This is further backed up by the Declaration of Arbroath, which states that the united peoples -- now called Scots -- came from Scythia in their wanderings. Before the Picts, Scotland was colonised by the Iberians who, many historians believe, erected the magnificent megalithic structures still found there today.

They Dwelt Beyond the North Wind

Ancient historians named the divisions of the Celts as the Hyperborei, who dwelt beyond the north wind; the Cimbri, settled at the "Old Oceans utmost bounds," Jutland, Friesland Islands, etc.; the Scythae, which included the Goths and Danes; the Dacii, who dwelt around the sources of the Danube; the Teutons, called Germans by Tacitus and others; the Acquitani, occupying the territory between Garonne and the Pyrenees. It is believed that the Scottish Gael is descended from the latter two.

These Celtic tribes are described by ancient historians as having animal emblems displayed on their shields. The Celtic Picts also had animals on their monuments and tattoed upon their bodies. Excavation of Scythian tombs in Russia and China have produced frozen and desert-dried corpses with tattoed animal symbols still discernable on their skins. Fitzroy Maclean in his A Concise History of Scotland mentions the fact that the Celtic Picts came from Scythia and also, significantly, notes that the three Pictish warriors depicted on a Orkney gravestone are "strangely Assyrian in their stance." It was, of course, from Assyria that the ancestors of the British People commenced their westward trek.

Scots, Picts and Saxons Joined in Common Cause

Scots came from Ireland in A.D. 258 and settled in Argyll on the western coast of Scotland. It is also a fact that the "English" were in Scotland before the Scots arrived! In A.D. 364 Scots, Picts and Saxons joined forces to attack the hated Romans -- reaching as far south as London before finally being repulsed by superior Roman arms. A regular flow of Scots emigrated to Scotland from Ireland. In the sixth century A.D. Scotland was divided into eight kingdoms:

1/. Galloway in the south-west -- populated by a mixture of Scots and Picts.

2/. Strathclyde, extending from Loch Lomond through Dunbarton, and embracing the counties of Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, Ayrshire, Peebleshire, Dumfriesshire, Westmorland and Cumberland to the river Derwent -- peopled by ancient Britons.

3/. Bernicia (an English Kingdom) stretched from the Humber in the south to Haddington in the north -- ruled by a confederation of Angles and Danes.

4/. Fortrenn (the ancient Kingdom of Fife) -- peopled by the Picts.

5/. Moray, a thaneship embracing Inverness, Ross and Cromarty -- populated by Picts and Norsemen.

6/. Alban, occupying the mountainous regions east of Drumalban and the Spey and the Lowland areas of Buchan and the Mearns -- a Pictish Kingdom.

7/. Dalriada, covering Argyll was the Kingdom of the Scots.

8/. Innisgall, covering the Western Isles and mainland territories of Caithness and Sutherland -- a jarldom ruled by Norsemen and Gallgaels.

The southern shores of the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh was continually fought over by Strathclyde Britons and Bernician English. It is interesting to note how Vikings were already united with English and Celtic peoples. Amongst all these peoples the ancient Celtic Church patiently and successfully ministered the gospel of the Kingdom of YEHOVAH God -- Columba being an outstanding figure in this respect.

From the end of the eighth century, the Norsemen invaded and crowded into Scotland. The Picts -- both Celtic and Canaanite -- were weakened by their incessant warfare with the fierce Vikings, and it is believed that this enabled the King of the Scots, Kenneth MacAlpine, to defeat them. This caused a mass migration of the Canaanite Picts to the New World -- leaving only a few scattered pockets of their kind in the islands of Scotland. In A.D. 844 Kenneth MacAlpine was crowned King of both the Celtic Picts and the Scots. His acceptance by the Picts was doubtless aided by the fact that there had been continual intermarrying between the Royal families of the Picts and the Scots -- and his mother was a Pictish Princess.

Celtic Traditions Were a Powerful Uniting Influence

The two peoples now became one nation, named the Scots. The Celtic traditions of the Scots had a powerful uniting influence upon all the various peoples inhabiting Scotland for, incredible though it may seem, those of British, English, Scandinavian and Norman descent took great pride in the Celtic past of their country. When the Viking, King Magnus, led punitive expeditions into Scotland to bring Viking colonies in line who had neglected to send tribute to their homeland, he fell in love with the Scottish garb and earned the nick-name "Magnus Barelegs" through wearing the kilt.

The language of the Scots, however, did not long prevail over all the nation. When Malcolm Canmore made an English Princess his Queen in 1058 -- the revered Saint Margaret whose tiny chapel is still in use in Edinburgh Castle -- English became the language of the Scottish Court. Malcolm's son, David I, was educated at the Anglo-Norman Court and his Queen was an Anglo-Norman. Throughout his reign he encouraged a peaceful invasion of Normans and English throughout his Kingdom.

Many Scottish Clans Were Founded by Norsemen and Normans

It is not generally realized that many of the proud Scottish clans were in fact founded by Norsemen and Normans, including the Cummings, Frasers, Gordons, Gunns, Hays and Hendersons, the Malcolms, MacLeods, MacNicols, Mathesons, Menzies and Morrisons, the Sinclairs and Stewarts, the Armstrongs, Bruces, Carnegies, Crawfords and Cunninghams, the Dalyells, Erkines, Hamiltons, Kerrs, Melvilles and Montgomeries, the Ramsays, the Ruthvens, the Setons and the Turnbulls. The clans Maxwell, Livingston (Lowland), Lindsay, Haldane, Eliot, Cranston and Barclay were founded by Englishmen. Sir Walter Scott declared --

Scotland's great hero, Robert the Bruce, was of Norman descent. Another great hero, William Wallace (Braveheart) was, as his name reveals, of Welsh descent.

The utter folly of demanding the division of Great Britain on "racial" grounds is surely obvious. The same peoples who colonized Scotland also colonized England, Wales and Ireland. Also, apart from a tiny minority left over from the Canaanite or Phoenician Picts and found in the western parts of these lands, the peoples of Britain and her kindred nations are racially ONE.

It is a known fact that anthropologists cannot find any racial difference between an Englishman, a Scot, an Irishman or a Welshman. Sir Arthur Keith made this statement:

"Except for a trick of speech or local mannerism, the most expert anthropologist cannot tell a Celt from a Saxon, or an Irishman from a Scotsman....From the physical point of view the Celt and Saxon are one....It is often said that we British are a mixed and mongrel collection of types and breeds; the truth is, that as regards physical type the inhabitants of the British Isles are the MOST UNIFORM of all the large nationalities of Europe."

Professor Huxley in his Racial Origins, wrote these very telling words:

"The invasion of the Saxons, the Danes, and the Normans changed the language of Britain, but added NO new physical element. Therefore we should not talk any more of Celts and Saxons, for they are all one. I never lose an opportunity of rooting up the FALSE IDEA that the Celts and Saxons are different races."

Modern scholars have come to realize that the idea of the Anglo-Saxons having exterminated or driven off all the Celtic peoples in England is equally ludicrous. Countless Celtic rituals and traditions still carried out throughout England prove the contrary. Of course, the ancient Scottish traditions which captivated Vikings, Angles and Normans alike -- the tartans, the bagpipes, music and dancing -- are still a valued part of the Scottish heritage. The environment, climate and history have shaped characteristics which others recognize as typical of the Scots. This is just as true of the English, Welsh and Irish -- and thank God for it!

These, the British Peoples, Are of YEHOVAH's Own Israel

The whole crux of the matter is found in the truth for which this church stands and which we hold dear -- the peoples who colonized the British Isles are descended from YEHOVAH God's servant people, Israel. These became lost to their true history, but were ever visible in the prophecies of YEHOVAH's Word, the Bible, which assert that the high destiny reserved for Israel will be fulfilled in those who, in the world of today, are recognized as the English-speaking family of nations. All of these are traceable to those parts of the world where the "gentilized" Israelites seemingly disappeared from history -- the Bible lands.

In this, what is envisaged as the last and greatest crisis endured by the modern descendants of Israel, the British people need UNITY as never before. The text which King James the First of England and Sixth of Scotland caused to be inscribed on his coins at the Union of the Crowns remains every whit as true today as it did back then:

"WHAT GOD HAS JOINED TOGETHER LET NO MAN PUT ASUNDER."
